7 Reasons To Begin Handboarding

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

If you're considering getting into this addicting miniature skateboarding activity, then you've come to the right place! By the end of this article you'll be itching to get your hands on your first handboard.

1.) You will become a better skateboarder

It may sound silly that playing with a toy will improve your abilities on an actual skateboard, but it's true. The fundamentals you will learn on a handboard translates to skateboarding and vice versa. Handboarding is of course much easier without limiting factors such as bodyweight and gravity, but the physics still apply. If you can do it on a handboard, you can begin to understand how to do it on a skateboard and understanding is half the battle of learning a new trick.

2.) It's easier than fingerboarding

The biggest difference between fingerboarding and handboarding is the separation of limbs. Skateboarding requires the use of two legs, while handboarding requires the use of two arms. Fingerboarding requires two fingers, but it's a one arm motion which hardly translates to actual skateboarding.

Although there are some seriously talented individuals out there that continue to blow my mind with their abilities on a fingerboard, the barrier of entry is much higher as it takes years of acute training before you begin to excel at fingerboarding and even then, you're still somewhat limited.

3.) It feels just as satisfying as skateboarding

Okay, maybe not. Sweating it out over a trick you've spent days working towards will never compare to doing it on a toy, but the same battle mentality is there. Focus in on a trick until you get it and you will get a rush of dopamine rewarding you for your efforts... just not as much as riding away from your first handrail on a real skateboard. Still, it's a close second!

4.) Handboarding is like skateboarding without the pain

Probably the most wimpiest reason on the list but it's true. I've had my fair share of battles in my younger years but growing up comes with it's responsibilities. Missing work for months on end because you broke your arm comes with a cost and it's not cheap.

5.) Retirement Activity

Speaking of growing up, this is probably the greatest reason alone for all you skateboarding veterans out there. I've seen too many friends get old and give up on skating altogether. Wether it's a job, family life or not enough free time in the day, there's always enough room in any schedule to pick up a handboard for a few minutes and bust out a few bangers for old times sake.

Relive your favorite tricks or take it a step further and build yourself a decent standing desk/work bench setup with a few realistic obstacles. There's nothing like the grinding sound of metal on marble to bring you back to the good ol' days.

6.) Realism

Handboards have become much more realistic over the years with companies such as Redemption, Genesis & Silent pressing wooden decks, forging metal trucks and lathing urethane wheels with actual bearings. Not only are handboards built from the same materials as skateboards, but the level of tricks you can pull off on a handboard is just about on par with what's possible in real life. Even cross handed approaches known as "alley-oops"allow for extra wind ups, letting you spin 360's and even 540's.

Take your realism to the next level with some of our realistic handboarding obstacles such as our Park Bench, Round Rail or Marble Ledge, all built with premium materials that skate and feel like the real thing.

7.) Stack some clips!

Chances are if you've spent any time on a skateboard you've done your fair share of video recording. After all, you've spent the last few weeks working on a trick that you just about land. To miss capturing it on video would be a sin!

The same goes for handboarding. Wether you set up your cell phone or use a decent video camera, the art of skateboarding videography and handboarding can go hand in hand.
